Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews, Jason Mraz and Ozzy Osbourne Parodied in SNL Skit
The Mellow Show was a pretty hilarious skit on Saturday Night Live. Hosted by “Jack Johnson,” played by Andy Samberg, The Mellow Show discusses all things mellow and only has mellow musicians as guests. Johnson introduced Dave Matthews, who was played by Bill Hader. Hader’s Matthews played his new song called “Chicken Panini.” Also joining them on the show was Jason Mraz, who was portrayed by guest host of SNL, Joseph Gordon Levitt. Lastly, Ozzy Osbourne joined the group, played by the real Dave Matthews. Osbourne’s song was anything but mellow, and when Johnson noted that it had scared Dave Matthews, Ozzy replied, “What doesn’t scare Dave Matthews? I mean look at him, his stupid face and his stupid feet, his voice makes me want to throw up in his hands.” All of the parodies were pretty spot on…but admittedly, Matthews’ version of Osbourne was the most hilarious and the most accurate.

Sound Check For En Concert
As noted on this blog, Jack’s recent CD/DVD release En Concert has drawn some rave reviews. Brenna Ruppert of Jack Central describes the effort as “a beautiful collaboration of live performances by Johnson. His followers and new listeners will be pleased with the flow of Johnson’s melodious acoustic sound that resonates immaculately throughout the album. En Concert is an impeccable expression of Johnson’s ‘dude’ persona and laid-back approach to producing music.” The CD is composed of live tracks recorded throughout Jack’s recent world tour. “En Concert’s opener, ‘Belle,’ is introduced with a heartfelt, roaring welcome from Johnson’s fans in Paris, France,” Ruppert writes. “As Johnson’s acoustics gently breeze over Cajun-influenced accordion renditions, he energizes the crowd with his French lyrics, paying tribute to his Parisian fans.”
“‘If I Had Eyes,’ performed at the Kokua Festival in Johnson’s homeland of Hawaii, demonstrates his perfection as a live performer,” Ruppert continues. “The tune flows through flawless arrangements of Johnson’s signature beach-folk acoustic guitar riffs complemented with cheery piano notes. ‘Bubbly Toes,’ a fan favorite, was performed in San Francisco and livens up the audience with Johnson’s unique, poppy lyrics about a girl.” The CD and DVD both provide an interesting glimpse into the Jack’s show style and give fans who have not seen him in person a better understanding of what they’re missing out on.

Sleep Through the Static…A Favorite Tune?
It’s hard to pick just one track from Jack Johnson’s most recent album Sleep Through the Static. The record is full of standout tunes like: “Sleep Through the Static,” “If I Had Eyes,” “Same Girl” and “Go On.” Even though I am still convinced that all of them are simply wonderful, I have a special feeling for his intro ballad: “All At Once.” The song is lovely, sweet and in a way, very simple. Check out the song in its entirety here and sing along to the words: “All at once/The world can overwhelm me/There’s almost nothing that you could tell me/That could ease my mind. Which way will you run?/When it’s always all around you/And the feeling lost and found you again/A Feeling that we have no control…”
