Free Green Day Concert Tonight!
Green Day shoved on the brakes during the American Music Awards last night when the group performed their go-to hit “21 Guns.” Though in comparison to most punk rock performances it still remained extreme, for anyone who has checked out a Green Day concert their pyro was downplayed. The group even decided to coordinate their outfits as Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, drummer Tree Cool and their three backing musicians were all clad in black. It seems that even their PG version was enough to get the audience going, as they picked up Favorite Alternative Rock Artist, beating out the Kings of Leon and Shinedown.
Yet today’s news might be slightly overshadowed by the fact that the punk rock trio is performing for free (yes tonight, November 23rd, 2009) at the LA Live Nokia Plaza, across from the Staples Center. Like many other artists are doing lately, they are using 1iota for the free event, and tickets can only be received by “invite only” via 1iota. The area surrounding the venue will be closed down due to the overwhelming response of the general public.

Green Day Staging New Music Video with “American Idiot” Cast
If you couldn’t get enough of Green Day’s 21st Century Breakdown, now you can get an updated version. The trio of Bay Area rockers are re-recording their hit album and single “21 Guns” with the soon to be Broadway cast of their play, American Idiot. The show cast and band are also scheduling a time to shoot the video for the new single, the original which was released in July. The new tune is said to be produced by Billie Joe Armstrong, the group’s front man, according to NME and will be downloadable by the end of November.
Still not satisfied? The group is also scheduled to release the album in its entirety as a soundtrack to the musical, recorded with the cast from the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California. The frontman even hoped that perhaps one day his musical American Idiot could come to London’s stages. “We’d love to bring it to London, it’d be great. We’d have it right next door to ‘Thriller,’” Billie Joe said to NME. The group is now off on their UK tour dates embracing the West End.

Green Day’s Summer Splash
Though they didn’t walk away with the top prize o fthe night, they still got a Woodie. Green Day was beat out for Kings of Leon for Woodie of the Year, but they still managed to walk away with Performing Woodie, while Matt and Kim earned themselves a Best Video Woodie. The mtvU Woodie Awards were announced during a pre-taped show last night, as Kings of Leon beat Asher Roth, Drake, MGMT and Silversun Pickups for teh top prize while Green Day got recognized for their crazy performances. The event was held at New York’s Roseland Ballroom and will be broadcast December 4th on MTV stations. Though the event still remains relatively small in comparison to other award ceremonies, it was still a great way to celebrate all of MTV’s work.
The group continues to plug on, as recently announced summer shows in London and Paris have been announced, with tickets going on sale this week. Green Day will be in Paris, France June 26th and tickets go on sale tomorrow, followed by more ticket sales that have already begun for their June 16th and June 17th shows in Manchester Lanchashire CCG and London’s Wembley Stadium.

Green Day’s Under the Tub
Rebels from northern California, Green Day - also known as Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt (Mike Pritchard) formed in 1988 in Berkeley. The group formed on the helm of friends and former bandmates Armstrong and Dirnt, who performed as Sweet Children when they were 14. The group’s first indie release was the EP 1000 Hours and included the drummer Al Sobrante. The underground rager eventually led them to a contract with Lookout, where they released the full length 1,039/ Smoothed Out Slappy Hour. Tre Cool eventually came on board following that release.
The group’s prominent hour finally came with the major label Dookie, released in spring 1994. The set found commercial success thanks to MTV support and their hit “Longview.” Eventually the set sold ten million copies in the States alone and won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance. The group continued to record, tour and sell new albums through the ‘00s. It was the rock opera (turned recent musical) American Idiot that became a surprise hit. With the singles “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and “Jesus of Suburbia,” the tracks made Green Day unstoppable. After the success of the 2004 set, the group relatively disappeared - until hardcore fans learned of their alias group the Foxboro Hot Tubs, who had been touring and released a new album. In May 2009 21st Century Breakdown was released.

Green Day to Tour with JET
As Green Day continues their world tour, this month through Australia, they have added another guest of featured performers. Australian outfit JET have returned from touring America, postponing their Sydney and Melbourne trips, to join Green Day as they jaunt around their home country. The punk rock group from the Bay Area will arrive in Perth on December 4th, reports WaToday.com. Promoter Michael Gudinski said: “We’re thrilled JET were able to accept Green Day’s invitation to tour Australia with them. Both JET and Green Day are renowned for their explosive live concerts, so these shows are going to be massive.” JET found crossover success when their single “Are you gonna be my girl” hit the States a few years back. Their new album was released in August.
In other news, Green Day - wrote Billie Joe - went into the studio yesterday to record “21 Guns” with the Berkeley Repertory Theater cast of “American Idiot.” The music used a few of the new singles from Green Day’s latest album, though the majority came from their album of the same name.

Green Day On to the Big Apple
With the Country Music Awards happening last night it is hard to say that much else was going on in the music world. Yet for Green Day, punk rock never really ends - as evident by the decades long flow of singles that still rise to the charts - as the group picked up a People’s Choice Award nomination in the Rock Band category. They will be up against veteran players like: the Kings of Leon, Daughtry, Muse and Paramore. The event is sure to get tons of attention when it airs in January, particularly because all of these rock acts are so diverse.
In other grandiose Green Day news, the group’s Berkeley Repertory Theater musical is now officially set for Broadway. Though it was a constant rumor during the extension run at the Bay Area venue, it was only just announced that there were real plans to move the play to New York as casting calls begin within the next few months. Playing to packed houses every night, the show is set to move to the Big Apple before next year. The play is based on the group’s 2004 album of the same name that earned the lowly punk rock group serious commercial fame with the singles “Holiday,” “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends” and “Jesus of Suburbia.”

Green Day’s Musical to Hit Broadway
Yesterday afternoon Green Day’s Berkeley Repertory Theater musical American Idiot was confirmed to be moving to Broadway. The producers of the show have put through a casting notice to New York and promoters said that the show will be coming to Broadway! The casting notice was made public yesterday as producers indicated they needed some new cast members for the critically and commercially acclaimed show. The musical is currently performing an extended run at the Berkeley Repertory Theater in the Bay Area, where the band members of Green Day are from. “There is a Broadway future for the show, but at this time no dates or theatre are confirmed,” Michael Hartman said to Playbill.com yesterday. The show’s posting never reveals where or when the production schedules will be needed.
The show is based on the punk rock operata of the same name by the band Green Day, and includes hit singles from that album as well as their latest. The show is produced by Tom Hulce and Ira Pittelman with direction by Michael Mayer, all three who worked on the Tony Award winning Spring Awakening and earned Mayer a Tony for Best Direction.
