Score one for the Federal Govn’t and Guns N’ Roses

Chinese Democracy, the long-rumored return to rock by Guns N’ Roses, is a lot like Bigfoot. Few claim to have seen it (or heard it, in this case), and with each waning year, any interest generated by the myth of a new album dies a little more.

But a couple months ago, a blogger named Kevin “Skwerl” Cogill posted nine tracks he claimed were from the new record. People listened to them, and they sounded very authentic. Apparently they were. Skwerl got a visit from Uncle Sam yesterday morning, who appeared in the guise of FBI agents who promptly arrested the blogger.

Pitchfork has a nice round-up of the event, plus links to previous and current stories about it. There’s also a quote from a colleague of Skwerl’s, posted on that individual’s blog: “Skwerl got himself hauled in by the FBI today over this whole GNR/Chinese Democracy leak fiasco, which seems to mean that people take this whole copyright thing pretty seriously.”

Well, really. What a crazy notion.
