Revisiting Billy Joel’s “The Stranger”

Billy Joel has pumped out an endless string of ballads and brilliantly written pop songs, but the one record that launched his star was The Stranger, released in 1977. The album is still a favorite today, with songs like “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” becoming legendary for their insight into human nature. The album has turned 30, and the AllMusic Blog gave it some props, acknowledging that it still has an enormous impact, even after all these years. As a reward for us dedicated Billy Joel fans, the record has been re-released in a deluxe version.

What’s special about this version? How about three discs-worth of material. That’s two filled with music plus a DVD. Besides the classic nine-track album, the discs compile Joel’s live concerts from the time, including a performance on the BBC. There’s also a 30-minute documentary on the making of the album.

Joel fans shouldn’t settle at just seeing recorded live performances, though. Joel is on tour, and concert tickets are selling fast. Get Billy Joel tickets at Stubhub.com.
