Lou Pearlman, Victorian villain and boy-band creator

Does the name Lou Pearlman ring any bells? Then what about names like Britney Spears, *NSYNC or the Backstreet Boys? Back in the ‘90s, Pearlman’s porcine figure was infamous throughout the pop-music business, as he was a major hitmaker. Unfortunately, he was also pretty crooked, landing himself in jail for money laundering. Besides being a skeezy pop kingpin, he also made his fortune selling shares of a fake blimp company—true story. The AV Club’s Nathan Rabin has a nice little update about him today: “Before becoming the king of teens, Pearlman sold fraudulent shares in a fraudulent blimp company. Who does that? He’s less a colorful music-world figure than a mustache-twirling 19th-century pulp-paperback villain.”
The article itself is actually about the weird stuff the AV Club staff owns, and it’s admittedly pretty damn strange. Apparently Pearlman was recognized as being a 20th Century Republican Leader before his arrest and sentencing, earning him a certificate signed by senators Trent Lott and Mitch McConnell. Glance through Pearlman’s Wikipedia page and you realize he is a pretty fascinating (if repellent) figure. And he gave the world all that beautiful music.
