Green Day Announce VMA Performance

Rolling Stone announced this morning that Green Day will perform live at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards in New York on September 13th. The gig will mark Green Day’s third time performing on the VMA stage, as the band played Insomniac‘s “Armatage Shanks” at the awards show debut in 1994 and then played American Idiot’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” in 2005. (The band also performed “Stuck With Me” on the VMA’s via satellite in 1995.) “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” was honored with the Video of the Year Award on 2005. Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said in a statement, “We are excited to be performing at the Video Music Awards. You never know what’s going to happen, and it’s always a memorable experience for us.”

The trio will join previously announced VMAs performers Muse, who will debut their new track “Uprising,” and Taylor Swift, who will unveil a new version of “You Belong With Me” off Fearless. Russell Brand, the British comedian who hosted the VMAs last year and is probably best known for his role in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, will host this year’s show. After being held in Los Angeles and Las Vegas for the past two years, the VMAs are returning to New York.
