David Byrne/Brian Eno album reviewed

Though it’s been available online for a while, the new David Byrne/Brian Eno collaboration finally got a plug at the AV Club, where the review was largely positive. The reviewer quite astutely points out that David Byrne has always kind of played at being in a mid-life crisis. But now that he’s actually a middle-aged man, his songwriting has that much more resonance in it. The biggest surprise on this record is how conventional it is. That’s not to say it’s not great, or that there are some strange sound on it, but after something like My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, the last Byrne/Eno collaboration, you’d expect a lot more weirdness to round out the album.

Instead, Everything that Happens Will Happen Today has a much more traditional pop song structure, and is even a bit folksy at times. There’s an audio sample of “Home” that you can listen to and get a good feel of what the review is hinting at.

If you haven’t seen Byrne’s amazing live show promoting this album, you’re highly encouraged to pick up some concert tickets before it wraps up. David Byrne tickets can be found at StubHub.com.
