Trent Reznor explains the appearing/disappearing Twitter account
Sometimes, the media should leave well enough alone. This is clear enough in most cases, where personal pain is inflicted by people prying into the private lives of celebrities. Other times, there isn’t a whole lot of pain involved, but it’s simply none of anyone’s business. That seems to be the message Trent Reznor has crafted at the beginning of an explanation he offered up on the Nine Inch Nails forums for his on-again-off-again relationship with Twitter.
As we all know, he’s a bit of a technophile, and he’s been very active on Twitter in the past. But Pitchfork reports that he started getting hateful messages from a group of people who were insulting him and his wife. Obviously, that’s not cool, so he would try to block them. But it wouldn’t stop, and if you “follow” someone on Twitter, you can see the entire thread of conversation leading up to the block. When this group of trolls starting hounding him about Erica de la Cruz, a fan with a terminal illness Reznor was raising money for (who subsequently passed away), those hateful messages were read by her family, causing quite some pain. Reznor is saying that’s why he just can’t be bothered to stay on Twitter anymore.
Pretty upsetting, naturally. Most fans just want to get concert tickets and celebrate the man’s music. Other people have nothing better to do, apparently.
