Not all RJD2 fans are happy
There’s this silly thing fans do when they really, really love an artist. If he or she does the same shtick over and over again, it gets old, and they’re lambasted for being unoriginal. But then if they explore new ground—like hip-hop/electronic artist RJD2 has been doing recently—then they complain because they want to hear the old stuff.
City Pages has a concert review of one of RJD2’s recent shows, at the end of which one unruly former fan yelled “Tell him to go back to making hip-hop records.” If you haven’t been following RJD2’s musical progress, his most recent albums have ventured more into electronic instrumental territory, or have traded rap for softer, plaintive vocals. It’s a different kind of music, to be sure, and definitely not for everybody. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t good.
Whatever your preference is, his live shows sounds very, very entertaining (how can you not love a show with video projections of Evil Dead or Hard Boiled?) There’s plenty of shows coming up, so anyone looking for concert tickets had best make those RJD2 tickets. Check Stubhub.com for tour dates.
