Fuck Buttons’ Andrew Hung talks about the music that shaped him

Indie-electronic act Fuck Buttons have attracted a lot of buzz around their gorgeous beats and emotional waves of sound. So what contributed to the formation of the band’s music? Apparently Chinese opera and Kylie Minogue, if an interview with Buttons member Andrew Hung is to be believed.

Pitchfork interviewed him for 5-10-15-20, their ongoing series where they ask musicians to talk about the most important music of their lives at five year intervals, and electronic music doesn’t really figure into the equation until later in Hung’s life. His parents emigrated from Hong Kong to the U.K., and brought Chinese opera music with them, so that’s what Hung probably listened to very, very early on in life. Slightly later, his older siblings introduced him to an infamous pop duet between Kylie and Jason Donovan. Aww.

It isn’t until around the age of 15 that Hung said he started taking an interest in alternative culture or music, starting with Bjork but quickly discovering, more importantly, Radiohead’s Kid A, which led him to Warp Records and it’s artist roster.
