Cinderella Story. Blogged.

The Cheeta Girls:

Remember The Commitments? That movie about a lovable bunch of working class, leather-jacket-wearing Dubliners who could sing R&B like they came from Mississippi, and which ended up turning around and going on tour after the movie came out?

It’s sorta like that, but with more glitter and Mickey Mouse.

The Cheetah Girls, a band of fresh young women into music about friendship and perserverence, rely on a bass-heavy feel to drive their pop’s rythym with a Spice-Girls tone to their voices, and it’s as catchy as it is danceable. Which is very. Hear some sample music on their website, where they’ve got trailers, downloads, and other great multimedia stuff.
The group got their start in the 2003 Disney Video and were big enough to turn it into a tour. They’ve been a huge hit across the country, and their sequel, Cheetah Girls 2, was released earlier this year.

The group serves up a dose of encouragement and even empowerment to its young fans, telling young women to become themselves while leading by musical example. Says Fran Grauman of Kids’ Music.com, “One of the best sections of the show had the girls appearing inside back-lit boxes in ’Cinderella’ poses. They broke through the gauzy fabric and performed one of my favorite of their non-holiday songs. ’I don’t wanna be like Cinderella… I’d rather rescue myself.’ The girls present some great messages for the young women while being 200% entertaining.” (Check out her full review for Kids’ Music.com here)

They’re playing today in Hershey, Pennsylvannia, and on the 25th will be appearing in Washington D.C. The complete list of tour dates and locations is online for the Cheetah Girls at StubHub, and it’s a great show to bring your young budding musicians to, especially those of the female disposition.
