Yep, still up there, right at the top, with no chance of them coming down soon.
The Jonas Brothers have completely cornered the teen music market, and enough people are buying their music that there’s little chance they’ll be coming down soon. They did sell fewer copies, which is to be expected (72 percent less, in fact–they debuted with 525,000 copies sold, compared with opening this week with 147,000 copies sold. Still enough to rank them at number one, but those units aren’t shifting as fast any more). It’s amazing how long an artists can dominate the Billboard 200, and especially when its a group of artists who, it seems, have only just started their careers.
If you were hoping to see them live, there’s still hope. Concert tickets can be found, though they’re selling fast. Get Jonas Brothers tickets at Stubhub.com.
If you haven’t been keeping up with the news about Alison Goldfrapp, she of the golden locks and atmospheric electronic music, than consider this an update. There’s a new album out (Seventh Tree) which was reviewed on Pitchfork recently. But the really good news is that Goldfrapp is hitting the road and touring extensively throughout the United States.
The tour starts this week in Ireland, than Scotland, before heading to New York and numerous major cities, Toronto, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles among them. Then she’s spending an inordinate amount of time in Australia and England, which is disappointing, since there’s plenty of fans who would love to see more of her right here in the states.

Interesting news from Pitchfork about Final Fantasy, which is issuing not one but two EPs in the near future. One of them, Pays to Please, is due on Oct. 21 (which is coming up faster than you think) on CD and 12″ EP. The limited edition release will be issued in both formats, but only 1,000 copies of each will be around to buy, so if you want it, you’re going to have to rush everyone else in the store for it.
So where does multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Andrew Bird come in? The man is one of 35 musicians assembled to perform on the EP (it also includes the Hidden Cameras frontman Paul Mathew and Drumheller’s Nick Fraser). Considering Bird’s albums are filled with a wide-range of instruments, from piano to strings to wind instruments, it’s easy to see why he’d be a handy individual in a 35-man orchestra.
Looking to see him live? You’ll need concert tickets. Get Andrew Bird tickets at Stubhub.com.

Despite the storm of coverage coming from the Democratic National Convention, people forget an essential truth about political conventions: They’re actually pretty boring. Even during elections, even in the midst of a closely contested race, they’re mostly about politicians making long speeches and trying to keep their jobs (via your votes).
Fortunately, part of being at the DNC means you tend to be supported by lots of great bands, which is why Denver has become a hotspot for awesome music this week. There’s plenty playing, from the Red Rock concert last night (covered here, along with much other weirdness, by the A.V. Club) to upcoming performances by Zooey Deschanel (She & Him), Jenny Lewis, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Cold War Kids and more. Expect a stand-out performance by Ben Gibbard, Death Cab for Cutie’s frontman.
Or even better, just see him performing with Death Cab for Cutie by getting concert tickets. They’re on tour now. Death Cab for Cutie tickets are available on Stubhub.com.
Well here’s an interesting twist from Rolling Stone: Take a musician from one of the past decades biggest indie bands and send him off to the Democratic National Convention with access to a blog. Chris Walla is roving all over the place, catching glimpses of Nancy Pelosi and shaking hands with Patrick Leahy in addition to spotting a few celebrities walking around (Henry Winkler?).
Hopefully the blog posts come fast and frequently, so he can be our eyes on the floor. There’s some comments already up on his blog posts challenging the whole concept of sending an indie musician to cover politics. Maybe people just need to give him a day or so. The real test will be whether he has an original point of view to contribute via the blog, and he seems like an opinionated person, so we may get that. We’ll wait and see.
Or we’ll get concert tickets and see him live. Get Death Cab for Cutie tickets at Stubhub.com.
A band like Sonic Youth, which has been so influential in the alternative music scene for several decades now, doesn’t seem like the kind of band that would be a major label gem. But that’s exactly what they’ve been for 18 years, having signed on with Geffen in 1990. Yep, you read that right. Goo, one of their seminal albums, came out almost 20 years ago. Makes you feel old, doesn’t it?
After almost two decades, though, Sonic Youth has fulfilled their contract and is leaving Geffen. Speaking to The Guardian, Thurston Moore said that the band’s last four or five albums have all been compromised as a result of being part of the majors, and an indie label has been picked out. Of course, he couldn’t reveal who it was. He did say they’re tentatively planning an album for Spring of 2009, so there’s plenty to look forward to.
Of course, you don’t have to wait that long to hear them perform live. Concert tickets are available now. Get Sonic Youth tickets at Stubhub.com.

It’s always nice to see your favorite musical artists taking up good causes. Not things like writing “We Are the World”-style songs, but actually raising money for causes that benefit large groups of people. Causes like the Slow Food Fest, which grows sustainable, healthy food. It’s a Bay-area festival, naturally–leave it up to the green-thumbs of Bay residents to come up with a project like this.
Not to be outdone by all the other music festivals going, Slow Food has created their own music bash–and what a lineup they’ve got! Ozomatli, G. Love and Special Sauce, The New Pornographers, Medeski, Martin & Wood and more. The top draw on the first day, however, is the extraordinary hip-hop team Gnarls Barkley.
If you’re a fan of “Crazy”–or their other songs–than you should make sure to get some concert tickets to see them. Gnarls Barkley tickets are available at Stubhub.com.
