Bhutto’s daughter vents her pain through hip-hop

Despite having faced her own allegations of corruption during her tenure in Pakistani politics, Benazir Bhutto was hailed in 2008 as one of the likeliest candidates to bring stability to Pakistan. Tragically, her chance at leadership ended in a violent bombing that shook her nation, as well as disheartening many around the world hoping for better times in Pakistan. Now, she’s being honored by her daughter, who has found her voice through hip-hop.

Reuters reports that Bakhtawar Bhutto, 18, has released a rap video of her singing in honor of her mother, with a video collage to go with it. It’s shown up recently on YouTube and Pakistani state-run television. This is certainly not the first time that hip-hop has been a medium for someone to express mourning over a tragedy, but it’s pretty unusual for rap or hip-hop to mingle with politics—especially in a country far from America, where hip-hop was created. But if anything, it’s a testament to the power of the music.
