Bruce Springsteen’s new record revealed

What would we do without Pitchfork? Well…presumably whatever it is we did over the past couple weeks, when the blog’s staff spent time with their families (and probably listening to music). But now that the holidays are over, they’ve got a nice little wrap-up of music news that you might have missed from the past week. Check it out here.

One of the biggest items on there is the news that Bruce Springsteen’s new best of compilation, Greatest Hits, will be released exclusively in Wal-Marts across the country. On top of that, he has a new album coming out entitled Working on a Dream. And on top of that, the Boss has a new song appearing in the Darren Aronofsky-directed film The Wrestler, titled after the movie. The film stars Mickey Roarke and is being hailed as a moving return for the actor. It’s sure to get lots of attention when it opens later this month, and you can bet that part of the attention will be going to Springsteen’s music as well.

After you’re done getting a Springsteen news fix, why not get some concert tickets? Bruce Springsteen tickets can be bought or sold online at StubHub.com.

Bhutto’s daughter vents her pain through hip-hop

Despite having faced her own allegations of corruption during her tenure in Pakistani politics, Benazir Bhutto was hailed in 2008 as one of the likeliest candidates to bring stability to Pakistan. Tragically, her chance at leadership ended in a violent bombing that shook her nation, as well as disheartening many around the world hoping for better times in Pakistan. Now, she’s being honored by her daughter, who has found her voice through hip-hop.

Reuters reports that Bakhtawar Bhutto, 18, has released a rap video of her singing in honor of her mother, with a video collage to go with it. It’s shown up recently on YouTube and Pakistani state-run television. This is certainly not the first time that hip-hop has been a medium for someone to express mourning over a tragedy, but it’s pretty unusual for rap or hip-hop to mingle with politics—especially in a country far from America, where hip-hop was created. But if anything, it’s a testament to the power of the music.

Flaming Lips Deliver in Oklahoma

The Flaming Lips partied it up in Oklahoma as the New Year dawned, at the Cox Convention Center.  About 11,000 fans packed the arena as the Lips ushered in the New Year with a powerful one and a half hour performance that left all the fans wanting more.  Of course with his enormous inflatable hamster ball Wayne Coyne knows how to attract attention.

The band played some memorable hits that included “Race For the Prize” and “The Firebird Suite.”  They also surprised and pleased audience members with an absolutely flawless rendition of Prince’s “Purple Rain.”  The night also featured the unforgettable ballads: “Mountain Side,” “In a Priest Driven Ambulance” and “Turn It On.”  The Flaming Lips threw a big New Year’s celecbration for their eager fans and subsequently told them to keep on partyin’ after the concert concluded.  Treat yourself to a wildly wacky night with your own pair of Flaming Lips tickets from Stubhub.com.
