Lil Wayne earns Grammy noms despite his voice

If there’s one thing you definitely can not accuse rapper Lil Wayne of, it’s turning in a charismatic performance. The man does good work—but some critics still find fault with his raspy voice. It’s true that it’s an acquired taste. Listening to his music can be difficult for those expecting a traditional singing voice, but Lil Wayne turns in something quite strong anyways. Performing at a recent show, a reviewer noted that he “reached deep on some notes, then easily soared into a rasp that would have made Tom Waits proud.”

A comparsion to the two men’s voices definitely could be made, despite the fact that they work in vastly different genres of music. Lil Wayne is also a talented lyricist, much like Tom Waits. This is all exceptional when you consider this part of the review: “Backed by a powerful band and DJ, [Wayne] ripped through a 90-minute set that included “Mr. Carter,” “Got Money,” “Turning Me On,” “Misunderstood,” “Go DJ” and many more that covered the breadth of his 10-year career. And mind you, he’s only 26.”

That’s a lot of hits in that short time. No wonder concert tickets for his shows always sell out. Get your Lil Wayne tickets at StubHub.com.

New Year, New Kelly Clarkson Single

Kelly Clarkson has been out of the spotlight recently, but the American Idol alum is set to release a new single, “My Life Would Suck Without You” Jan. 19 on U.S. radio outlets. The single will usher in her fourth, as-yet-untitled studio record, which is set for release March 17 via RCA. The album is the follow-up to her third studio effort, My December, which was released in 2007 and has moved 780,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. A track list for Clarkson’s forthcoming album hasn’t been released yet, but the singer reportedly worked with producer/songwriter Dr. Luke and OneRepublic leader Ryan Tedder.

Clarkson previously butted heads with RCA exec Clive Davis about her desire to exercise more creative control over her music after her 2004 album Breakaway was a success (she co-wrote several songs on the record). A tour planned in support of My December was canceled (when tickets sales were lower than expected) and reconfigured to allow the singer to play smaller venues. Clarkson signed with manager Narvel Blackstock last fall and subsequently stepped out on a successful tour with his wife, country singer Reca McEntire.

George Strait lullabies deemed “least essential album”

Ah, the sweet sounds of George Strait. Few country stars have achieved the kind of fame and recognition that he has, and his traditional country continues to charm fans all over the country. Even small fans. Fans who aren’t old enough to buy tickets to his shows.

For them, there is Hushabye Baby: Lullaby Renditions of George Strait. Featuring a charming, patriotic farm scene on the cover and a horse wearing a hat, this is the country album your children have been looking for. It’s also the second album on the A.V. Club’s list of the least essential albums of 2008, coming in just after Whitesnake’s Good to be Bad (which takes home “Least essential album by a band that’s just a band because the leader singer still owns the right to its name). Also listed is Yes We Can: Voices of a Grassroots Movement—Special Edition, also known as the Barack Obama soundtrack, and Journey’s new album. Yep, Journey is still putting out albums.

While these albums may be inessential, George Strait is certainly essential to those who love country. Get George Strait tickets before they sell out. Concert tickets can be found at StubHub.com.
