VH1 celebrates The Who’s legacy

July 14, 2008

Few bands can claim to have been as big an influence on rock ‘n’ roll as The Who can, and this past weekend, bands, artists and various celebrities were present at an event to recognize the famous mods for their contribution.

The show itself was VH1’s third annual Rock Honors, where a handful of important artists are celebrated and usually a younger band plays a cover of their best-known work. But for this year’s show, the music channel decided to go all out and spend an evening honoring The Who. Celebrities including David Duchovny, Rainn Wilson, and Adam Sandler. The bands honoring The Who included The Flaming Lips, Tenacious D and Pearl Jam.

Honestly? The honors are overdue. The Rolling Stones are–for very good reason–often looked at as the kings of rock ‘n’ roll coming out of the ’60s. The Who is the yin to their yang, and deserves the props they’re getting here.

Radiohead is a green band

July 14, 2008

These days, it’s actually quite easy being green. More and more public figures have jumped on to the environmental bandwagon, and are taking greater interest in the effect they have on the earth. Radiohead is no different, and has actually teamed up with a British environmental group that will calculate your carbon footprint based on travel data you enter into Radiohead’s Web site.

It’s kind of fun and interesting to play with the numbers. But in other Radiohead news, you can finally see that trippy “House of Cards” music video referenced here in an earlier post. The video was created with using no camera or lights–just 64 lasers rotating 360 degrees, Geometric Informatics and Velodyne LIDAR. You can watch the video and find out more about how it was made here.

Oberst to appear at British festival

July 14, 2008

One of the most exciting music news items for Bright Eyes fans to follow has been the evolution of Conor Oberst’s new solo career, which features a backing band called the Mystic Valley Band. Conor Oberst tickets will be hot items for those who were fans of the singer/songwriter’s passionate songs as Bright Eyes, but he’s taking a new approach that may appeal to an even broader group of fans.

Those across the pond will be able to see them live at the End of the Road festival. There’s a great line-up for that concert, including the Mountain Goats, Low, Mercury Rev, Jason Molina, Sun Kil Moon, American Music Club, Calexico, the Constantines, and British Sea Power, just to name a few. Should be an energetic crowd considering names like that.

Of course, those of us stateside would like to see Oberst, too. Concert tickets to his shows can be found at Stubhub.com.
