The past decade has seen a number of new supergroups form (and generally disband). Velvet Revolver was one example; Gorillaz would be another example. Now, fans of mash-ups finally have their own supergroup to look forward to seeing live. Mash-ups are the practice of cutting up and remixing well-known songs into entirely new ones, or blending so many together that you effectively create a sonic, pop-culture collage. Three of the best DJs working in the field are Dan Deacon, Naeem Juwan (MC Spank Rock) and Gregg Gillis (Girl Talk).
As it turns out, all three will be appearing at Whartscape 2008 to form a single entity. The as-yet-unnamed supergroup is sure to be awesome, and there’s a lot of fans out there who will be thrilled to see them perform live. Girl Talk especially is making a splash these days with the release of a new album, and fortunately, the hip-hop artist has concert tickets available for sale on Stubhub.com. Music fans in the land down under have a chance to hear at least two awesome bands come Aug. 2 and 3. The upcoming Splendour the Grass festival will have two major headliners that will both be big draws: Sigur Ros and Vampire Weekend. Sigur Ros is pretty well known by now. The Icelandic band makes amazing, atmospheric aural soundscapes, and have recently released some new material.
Vampire Weekend are a newer band on the scene. Fresh out of college, the band’s members are known for hyper-literate lyrics and song titles. One of their hit songs, “Oxford Comma,” is a dead giveaway of their erudition. They’re clearly a band that will be well-loved by English nerds.
Fortunately, both have concert tickets available at Stubhub.com. Sigur Ros tickets and Vampire Weekend tickets are on sale now.
All fans of Fall Out Boy: listen up. A tour plan is in the works for the prominent American rock band from Wilmette, Illinois. The band currently consists of Patrick Stump, Pete Wentz, Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley. Some of the cities that Fall Out Boy has listed on their fall tour include: Birmingham, London and Glasgow. More cities will be added to the tour as the date draws near. Fall Out Boy has won several awards for its album called From Under the Cork Tree, which was released in 2005. The group continously tours and has a large international fanbase.
In February of 2007 the band released their highly successful album, Infinity on High, which reached major chart success and the first single, “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race,” reached the number one spot on the Pop 100 and number two on the Billboard Hot 100. They will likely continue to record and tour in the years to come, so keep an eye for them to appear in a city near you. Get your own pair of Fall Out Boy tickets from Stubhub.com.
Johnny Cash needs no introduction, even for music fans that aren’t that familiar with his work. In the final years of his life, however, he recorded several odd covers, most notably of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt.” His reinterpretations were brilliant, and earned some notice on their own merits.
Now, it looks like Snoop Dogg is going to do a little genre crossing of his own. Snoop Dogg will be releasing a remix album covering some of Johnny Cash’s best-known songs. That includes “I Walk the Line,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Doin’ My Time” and “Leave that Junk Alone.” Johnny Cash Remixed will be released Oct. 14, with a vinyl release coming out shortly afterward.
If you’re lucky, maybe Snoop Dogg will perform some of those covers on his live tour. Snoop Dogg tickets, along with other concert tickets, are available now on Stubhub.com.
