Another Beck review

July 8, 2008

With an artist as prolific as Beck, you can be sure that a new album means a lot of attention. Sure enough, Modern Guilt, his most recent album, is accumulating reviews–the majority of them positive–at an unbelievable rate. The A.V. Club is the latest to give their thumbs-up (a “B” rating, really) while acknowledging that Beck has always been playing between two extremes during his career: “the hip-hop-embracing, sample-crazy fun-lover (Midnite Vultures, Guero) and then there’s the master of atmospheric downer-folk (Mutations, Sea Change).”

Modern Guilt, the reviewer says, generally falls in the a latter side of the scale, though there’s still beats to be found, courtesy of producer DJ Dangermouse. You can never be sure what Beck is going to end up doing on an album, and this one, like all of them, is full of surprises.

With the artist on tour, you can be sure concert tickets will sell out fast. Get Beck tickets at Stubhub.com.

Aimee Mann interview

July 8, 2008

The lovely and talented Aimee Mann seems to have no shortage of talent. She’s an amazing songwriter with a great voice, but what makes her the most unique is her abilities as a storyteller. Her songs manage to paint portraits of all sorts of odd characters with incredible depth–and her loyal fan base appreciates her skills.

Over at the USA Today pop culture blog, there’s a brief excerpt of an interview with Mann, and also a link to a podcast interview with the singer/songwriter. There’s some interesting questions answered ranging from the meanings of specific songs to her artwork and even her brief, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it role in The Big Lebowski (she’s the girlfriend of one of the nihilists who produces the infamous severed toe).

Quick note: Be sure to read the rest of the Pop Candy Blog. It’s pretty amazing, with recent interviews including John Waters and the director of an upcoming film adaptation of the graphic novel series Y: The Last Man.

Back to Aimee, though, who is currently on tour. You can find Aimee Mann tickets, or other concert tickets, at Stubhub.com.

Britney Spears making appearance on Madonna’s tour

July 8, 2008

During the 2003 MTV Music Video Awards, Madonna and Britney Spears joined one another on stage, the teen pop star of today meeting the teen pop star of yesteryear, and affectionately acknowledged one another by macking out on stage. It was pretty controversial at the time, and surely you remember it.

But it doesn’t look like it will be the last time Brit and Madonna will appear on stage together…at least virtually. Britney Spears is expected to show up on an electronic screen during Madonna’s upcoming “Sticky and Sweet” tour. She’s rumored to be recording video at the moment for the widely anticipated tour.

It’s wonderful to see that pop stars stick together, and considering the intense media scrutiny that Britney has received in the recent past, she could use support from a strong woman who’s used to the limelight and has lived through several major changes throughout her eclectic musical career.

You could get concert tickets and see Madonna live. Madonna tickets are available at Stubhub.com.
