The star has just signed a massive touring deal with Live Nation. The 10-year deal also includes album releases and merchandising. It’s estimated to be worth $70 to $100 million. According to a recent news item on Rolling Stone’s Web site, the deal is similar to one recently signed by the likes of Madonna, Jay-Z and U2. This could definitely be the wave of the future as the concert giant grows in size and develops a bulging roster of major pop stars. They could become even bigger than they already are.

Asbury Park legend immortalized by Springsteen passes on

July 3, 2008

She had her place on the crumbling boardwalk at Asbury Park, a weary but still beautiful throwback to the days when the seaside resort was a thriving getaway. Madame Marie was known to all who passed by, telling fortunes by reading her crystal ball, and generally lending color to the always colorful New Jersey.

According to this news item, she passed on last Friday at the age of 93. She was beloved by those who still found a sparkle in the fading paint of Asbury Park–like Jersey’s native son Bruce Springsteen, who immortalized her in lyrics on “Fourth of July, Asbury Park (Sandy).” Springsteen remembered her fondly on his Web site: “I’d sit across from her on the metal guard rail bordering the beach, and watched as she led the day-trippers into the small back room where she would unlock a few of the mysteries of their future,” Springsteen writes in tribute on his website. “She always told me mine looked pretty good—she was right.

“Over here on E Street, we will miss her.”

If you click it, they will come: The media’s infatuation with Amy Winehouse

July 3, 2008

It’s not like anyone can ignore the elephant in the room regarding the day-to-day, out of control antics of soulstress Amy Winehouse. With a beautiful voice and genuine musical talent–certainly more than her American counterparts in media saturation–what the public sees of Winehouse is no more than a tragic unraveling at a very young age.

But is the coverage fair? A BBC editorial seems to think so. It’s the duty of the press to cover what’s considered newsworthy–or phrased another way, to not ignore what everyone’s talking about. But it’s also their duty to steer the national dialogue with intelligence. If not a single news item ever appeared again on Amy Winehouse or Britney Spears, would the world be worse off? In the words of Youtube celebrity Chris Crocker, leave the pop stars alone. It’s not nearly important enough to warrant the constant intrusion into their personal lives.

Winehouse is still touring, and you can be sure her fans are standing by her through all this, and still seeking out concert tickets. Amy Winehouse tickets can be found at Stubhub.com.
