After a dozen years, emo-punkers Alkaline Trio have finally jumped ship to a major, producing a unique album that’s drawing some positive reviews. Over at the A.V. Club, the reviewer found it a vast improvement over the over-produced Crimson, noting that numerous tracks deliver the punch that attracted the band so much attention in the first place.
“…the fundamental precepts remain as entrenched as ever: huge, heavily melodic punk guitars; a tight, aggressive rhythm section; lots of tag-team vocal melodies from guitarist Matt Skiba and bassist Dan Andriano. The parts come together most powerfully in the soaring choruses, another Trio fundamental.”

When Liz Phair’s Exile in Guyville came out in the ’90s, it was considered a watershed for slacker chicks in their early 20s trying to figure themselves and their love lives out. It’s remained a favorite, both for its dirty lyrics (like on “Flower”) and the insight that touched many of its listeners. Now, Phair is back and recording quite a bit. She’s on tour performing Guyville in its entirety, plus some bonus songs.
Fortunately, Pitchfork has managed to wrangle an interview with Phair, and it’s a long one at that. Filled with juicy details about her past and the influences in her life that inspired the songs on Guyville, it’s a compelling read that now Liz Phair fan can turn down.
