Devo show reviewed

June 30, 2008

Devo and Tom Tom Club, two favorites from the ’80s alt-rock scene, are now back on tour and giving their all to fans all over the country. You can bet that both bands received a warm welcome in New York, where they were both very popular in their heyday. The crowd at Williamsburg got to see these artists perform hit songs that they probably hadn’t heard live since high school–or possibly ever. Considering the average age of people living there, there’s a good chance they only heard these bands when their older brothers or sisters moved to college and left some records at home.

There’s a great review of a recent show here. If you’re a fan of either band, or if you just didn’t get a chance to see this awesome show, live it through these words.

The Zombies are back on tour

June 30, 2008

In case you’ve been ignoring the music press lately, you’d see that there’s numerous bands that are reuniting and giving the tour life another shot. Many of these, from Echo and the Bunnymen to My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain, are alt-rock legends from the ’80s and early ’90s. But one infamous band hails from an even more distant time. The Zombies were a massive success in the ’60s, and are still beloved for their songs today. Hits like “She’s not There” and “Time of the Season” are on heavy rotation on the classics station, but you can bet they’re in everyone’s iPods as well.

The Zombies crafted brilliant pop that’s irresistible to ignore. Thankfully, they’re looking at visiting cities all across the country on this tour and sharing that music with us once again.

Hall and Oates are back…and so is Oates’ ’stache

June 30, 2008

Legendary pop team Hall and Oates are back on the road, but you might be seeing Oates–or his mustache, at least, on television soon as well. According to Billboard, via a Rolling Stone blog, Oates is currently shopping around a cartoon show pitch that involves him and his mustache engaging in wacky adventures together. Truly bizarre or truly awesome?

J-Stache, as the show will be called, centers around a family man (Oates) lured back into the wild rock lifestyle by his mustache, improbably voiced by Dave Attell. In the pilot, they’re rumored to attempt opening a rock ‘n’ roll hall of fame dedicated to only artists with mustaches, but have to fight off Tom Selleck and a pack of goons. This will truly be great entertainment.

While you anticipate the show, why not get concert tickets to see both performers live? Hall and Oates tickets are now available at Stubhub.com.

Radiohead video director Michel Gondry lists his favorite 25 music vids

June 27, 2008

The video for “Knives Out” is a weird one. Most directors who attempt to “film” a nightmare or fever dream usually make it contrived, throwing a lot of crazy images on screen and proclaiming it surreal. Michel Gondry’s video actually feels like a dream, with Thom Yorke at the center of it. It’s certainly strange, but the persistent anxiety in the video fits perfectly with the song. The best part is undoubtedly at about 1:40, when Yorke looks under the covers of his bed and sees a family seated around a table, eating his body, apparently.

Regardless, if you’re a fan of Gondry’s brilliant visions, you should see Entertainment Weekly’s compilation of his 25 favorite music videos. There’s some similarly awesome picks, including Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer,” which never gets old.

Devo performs!

June 27, 2008

If you weren’t in Brooklyn last night, lament missing a hot show. Devo, along with opening acts Tom Tom Club and the fabulous Dan Deacon. Pictures are here. It’s strange to see these guys don their suits and energy domes, if only because they’re no longer the awkward young New Wavers of yesteryear. That doesn’t dampen their performances any, but it’s easier to see Mark Mothersbaugh as a doughy grandfather than a brassy synth-rocker these days.

Fortunately, we still have the band to please the fans, and there’s plenty of them, you can be sure. If you haven’t already lined up concert tickets for the band’s upcoming shows, you might want to read through their list of tour dates and find some close to you. The sooner the better, because you can be sure Devo tickets will run out fast.

Boxing Jesus and Mary

June 27, 2008

If the title of this posts proves deceptively more interesting than the post itself, apologies. Sounds like a royal rumble for the ages, though, doesn’t it?

But it’s not in reference to any religiously-themed sporting events. It’s in reference to the new The Jesus and Mary Chain boxed set that’s coming out Sept. 31. That’s 81 tracks of rarities and B-sides, plus plenty extra treats like art work, interviews with the Brothers Reid, a double-sided poster and rare photos. Get a glimpse of it here, but try to keep the drool off your keyboard.

This is a true fan’s smörgåsbord, and those fervent fans of The Jesus and Mary Chain will be lining up to get this. Not as fast as they’ll  be lining up for concert tickets, but it’s still something to look forward to.

Calling all musicians: Open for Coldplay

June 26, 2008

Coldplay is extending a pretty unique offer to its fans around the country now that the band’s tour, supporting “Viva la Vida!” is now in full swing. Chris Martin and company are asking aspiring musicians and bands to send in YouTube clips of them performing. The best one will get to climb on stage with the international superstars and perform in front of their crowds.

That’s an amazingly generous offer, and hopefully enough bands with serious talent stumble across it and give it a shot. It would be a brilliant opportunity for all bands that apply, since they would be getting an chance at earning major exposure and maybe even launching themselves into the big time. In an era where appearing on a television show like American Idol can make your career, this is worth a shot.

Devo suing McDonald’s

June 26, 2008

In a very strange and twisted attempt to market American Idol to children, McDonald’s has teamed up with the program and designed several Happy Meals toys. With names like Disco Dave and Country Clay, you know these brightly colored plastic chunks will keep your children entertained for at least three seconds.

But one of them is causing quite a stir, which Pitchfork was quick to cover. New Wave Nigel, a figure with angular glasses and wearing Devo’s trademark energy dome hat, has angered the New Wave band, claiming they weren’t in any way consulted for the appearance of this little fellow. It also apparently plays a song reminiscent of Devo’s jerky, synth-rock style.

Now a truly strange twist would be if McDonald’s turned around and slapped Devo with a suit for writing “Too Much Paranoias”: “Think I got a big mac attack/Hold the pickles, hold the lettuce/Special orders don’t upset us/All we ask is that you let us/Serve it your way!”

Devo tickets and other concert tickets are available at Stubhub.com.
