Barbra Streisand Blog

A Letter from Barbra!

Barbra Streisand now has five No. 1 albums in five consecutive decades, a feat that might not be matched for a long, long time. Today she wrote a nice letter of thanks to her fans and her collaborators, specifically Diana Krall, Tommy LiPuma, Jay Landers and Marty Erlichman, who were integral to the success of Love Is the Answer. That was very nice of Barbra Streisand to send out a thank you letter like that. Here’s a quote from the letter:

“You’d think that getting the news that you’ve been Number One in five consecutive decades would make you feel old, but this makes me feel young. Thank you all.”

Thanks, Barbra Streisand Blog readers for making Barbra No. 1 once again!  You guys rock!  Now go enjoy your weekend, winners, and we’ll see you all back here at Barbra Streisand headquarters on Monday.

Theatre Thursday: Meet the Fockers

Another version of Theatre Thursday is upon us, and we’re thinking about something theatrical that Barbra has done over the years. Today we’re talking about Meet the Fockers, a comedy starring Ben Stiller from a few years back. Barbra Streisand had a nice role in the film, playing Ben Stiller’s mother, Roz Focker, a sex therapist for the elderly.  Dustin Hoffman plays Roz’s husband.

You can check out some of the movie information about Meet the Fockers at IMDB.com.  You can get these nice quotes, which Barbra says in the movie:

Roz Focker: You’re avoiding confusion by strapping a boob on a man?

Roz Focker: The man is loose, he’s limber, and he’s ready for action.

People Needing People: George W. Bush

Every Wednesday we like to take a look at some of the influential people in Barbra Streisand’s life, and this time we’re going to talk a little about former President George W. Bush. Barbra and George haven’t exactly seen eye to eye in the past. In fact, if you read some of Barbra’s political comments and statements, you’ll see that she’s on the opposite side of the political isle, and has criticized the former President on many occasions. However, on one occasion the President got to meet Barbra. Look at this odd video! Barbra Streisand and President Bush kissed once!

Well, much about George W. Bush is widely known since he’s quite a public figure. If you’re interested in knowing some basic stuff, go to Wikipedia. George W. is, of course, the son of former President George Herbert-Walker Bush, and the brother of former Florida Governor Jeb Bush. He served as the Governor of Texas and two terms as President of the United States, notably overseeing the nation during the 9-11 attacks and the initiation of military responses in both Afghanistan and Iraq. At home he helped institute policy initiatives like No Child left Behind and the Patriot Act. Today he lives in Texas and is writing a book.

Music Monday: “The Way We Were”

Hi Barbra fans. We hope you all had a great weekend, but it’s time to get back into the groove of the work week. it’s a bummer, but to help get you Streisand fans going on Mondays we have Music Monday, where we share a song from Barbra’s past. How about we take a track from one of Barbra’s most prolific times, the mid 1970s. Barbra had a hit song and a hit movie called “The Way We Were.”

“The Way We Were” went to No. 1 on the US Hot 100 Billboard charts and eventually went platinum. It was arguably her biggest hit single at that time in her career.  The song went along with the movie and they both shot straight to the top. If you’re interested in learning more about the song, check out the Wikipedia article on it. Or, if you just want to sit at your desk and enjoy the music, play the video from this Google video link. We leave you with some touching lyrics:

“Can it be that it was all so simple then
Or has time rewritten every line
If we had the chance to do it all again
Tell me - Would we? Could we?

Memories
May be beautiful and yet
What’s too painful to remember
We simply to choose to forget”

Video: Barbra’s Village Vanguard Performance

You can catch a video of Barbra Streisand’s performance at the Village Vanguard. You haven’t forgotten already have you? Well, in case you have a slight case of amnesia, you’ll recall that Barbra Streisand recently went to the Village Vanguard, a famous Jazz club in New York City that she last performed at in the 1960s, and gave the performance of a lifetime to an intimate group of ticket holders. Well, now everybody can see the video of that performance. Just go to the Barbra Streisand Website. Here you can get a link to the online video.

isn’t the Internet great?! You can now see Barbra Streisand perform at the Village Vanguard from the comfort of your home! However, it’s clearly better to be there in person. The sound quality is better, the environment of such a club is part of the whole experience. So enjoy the video. Hopefully you’ll get to see Barbra perform live sometime very soon!

Theatre Thursday: “Papa Can You Hear Me?”

On Thursdays we try to focus on something theatrical that Barbra has done over the years. Today it’s “Papa Can You Hear Me?” One of the most famous songs from Barbra’s famous film Yentl, “Papa, Can You Hear Me?” is one of the most instantly recognizable Streisand songs. If you’re interested, you can check out this clip of the song, being performed by Babs in Yentl.

Alan and Marilyn Bergman wrote the lyrics of the song, and it was written by Michel Legrand. Many other artists have covered the song, and there are plenty of versions out there to choose from, but for most people, Barbra’s version from the film is the original and the best.

What do you think is Barbra’s best musical number from a film?  There’s “Papa Can You Hear Me?,” “Miss Marmelstein,” and who can forget “People”? Well, something to think about as you go through your Thursday. Enjoy!

Music Monday: “Woman in Love”

Hello Babs fans! It’s Monday, so it’s not going to be a great day for most of you.  The weekend is so far away. But to cheer you up we have a nice Barbra Streisand single to get inside your head. How about we take it all the way back to 1980, back when Barbra was donning a large, curly fro and wearing hideous shapeless garments… ahhh, remember the early ‘80s? We’re talking, of course, about “Woman In Love.”

“Woman in Love” came out after Barbra was already an established star on the radio. The single went to No. 1 in the US Hot 100 as well as several other countries’ charts and went Platinum. If you’re interested in getting some information on the song, check out this Wikipedia link. But, if you’re just interested in playing it on your headphones at work, here’s the video link. We leave you with a nice quote from the lyrics:

“The road is narrow and long
when eyes meet eyes
and the feeling is strong.

I turn away from the wall.
I stumble and fall
but I give you it all…

I am a woman in love
and I’ll do anything

to get you into my world
and hold you within.”
